{"id":228131,"date":"2023-02-22T20:30:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T15:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=228131"},"modified":"2023-02-22T20:30:14","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T15:00:14","slug":"turn-off-the-tap-of-urban-bias-in-rural-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/turn-off-the-tap-of-urban-bias-in-rural-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Turn off the tap of urban bias in rural development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: The post is based on the article\u202f\u201c<strong>Turn off the tap of urban bias in rural development<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>The Hindu<\/strong> on\u202f<strong>22<sup>nd<\/sup> February 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 2 \u2013 Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong>reasons behind increasing urban rural disparity<\/p>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: The article discusses the increasing urban and rural disparity and the performance of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the reasons behind increasing urban rural disparity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Biased Policies:<\/strong> The disparity has increased due to bias policies made by government and institutions for urban areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spill-over effect<\/strong>: It refers to the development of rural areas which is dependent on larger urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, rural areas which are far away from the urban areas not only suffer from a lack of development but also keep falling behind rural areas which are closer to the urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched by the government to reduce the disparity amongst the rural urban areas in access to tap water.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is JJM?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/jal-jeevan-mission\/\"><strong>Click Here to Read<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The safe drinking water under JJM will <strong>a)<\/strong> improve health and nutrition and <strong>b)<\/strong> reduce the workload of women and girl children while ensuring their safety.<\/p>\n<p>Further, \u201cavailability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all\u201d is the sixth goal in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations to be achieved by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the progress of JJM in ensuring safe tap water in rural areas of Tamil Nadu has also been influenced by urban factors.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What has been the performance of JJM in Tamil Nadu?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The data for 2022 reveal that there has been variation in the district wise coverage of tap water in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> rural households in Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Vellore have better coverage of JJM, while rural households in Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Nagappatinam districts have not enough tap water connections.<\/p>\n<p>It was found that the progress of JJM was better in those districts that have <strong>better percentage of urban population<\/strong> and districts with low urban population percentages were lagging in the implementation of the JJM.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, it shows that urban rural bias exists even in accessing the basic facilities like tap water.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can be the course of action?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The government must take additional measures to prioritise the implementation of the JJM scheme in districts with a high rural population in order to reach the goal of JJM.<\/p>\n<p>This will not only help to correct urban bias but also meet the SDG goal with regard to tapping water connections by 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article\u202f\u201cTurn off the tap of urban bias in rural development\u201d published in The Hindu on\u202f22nd February 2023.
