The project is to be implemented in three phases over the next 30 years.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About the Project<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/development-of-great-nicobar-strategic-imperative-and-ecological-concerns\/\"><strong>Click Here to Read<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the concerns with the project?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Great Nicobar Island is known for its rainforest ecosystems, having unique coral reefs and rare species of turtles and other fauna and flora.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the protection of leatherback sea turtles, the flagship turtle species of this island, is part of the country\u2019s <strong>National Marine Turtle Action Plan<\/strong>. The <strong>Galathea Bay<\/strong> is among the important marine turtle habitats of India.<\/p>\n<p>Great Nicobar Island also lies <strong>in the seismically active zone<\/strong> and is prone to maritime hazards like tsunamis.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 850 square kilometres of the island\u2019s area is notified as tribal reserve under the <strong>Andaman and Nicobar Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulations, 1956.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The area was also designated as a <strong>biosphere reserve<\/strong> in 1989, and made part of Unesco\u2019s <strong>\u201cMan and Biosphere Programme\u201d<\/strong> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the <strong>Shompen and Nicobarese tribes<\/strong> reside in the dense tropical rainforests of the Great Nicobar.
