Beyond that point, the seas are under the jurisdiction of no country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the high seas comprise more than 60 percent of the world\u2019s oceans and nearly half the planet\u2019s surface, they have long-drawn far less attention than coastal waters and a few iconic species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only about 1 percent of the high seas are currently protected.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the need for the Treaty on High Seas?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-un-treaty-on-high-seas\/\"><b>Click Here to read<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key provisions of the <\/b><b>Treaty on the High Sea?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty is legally binding. It aims to place 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, to safeguard and recuperate marine nature. It is a legally binding treaty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key Provisions of the treaty<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>New body:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The treaty will create a new body to manage the conservation of ocean life and establish marine protected areas on the high seas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The treaty includes various aspects of marine conservation such as<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong>1)<\/strong> establishing marine protected areas to put limits on certain activities, <strong>2)<\/strong> establishment of ground rules for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental impact assessments (EIA) or clearances for the sustainability of works, <strong>3)<\/strong> financial support to countries and <strong>4)<\/strong> sharing other scientific knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rights of companies engaged in exploration activities on the high sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong>: A key aspect of the treaty is deciding on the rights of companies that undertake exploration for biological resources on the high seas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Significance of the treaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treaty is crucial for enforcing the 30&#215;30 pledge made by countries at the UN biodiversity conference in December, to protect a third of the sea (and land) by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cNations secure U.N. global high seas biodiversity pact\u201d published in The Hindu on 6th March 2023.
