{"id":230390,"date":"2023-03-10T19:39:50","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T14:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=230390"},"modified":"2023-03-10T19:39:50","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T14:09:50","slug":"world-to-miss-goal-on-cutting-sodium-intake-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-to-miss-goal-on-cutting-sodium-intake-says-who\/","title":{"rendered":"World to miss goal on cutting sodium intake, says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cWorld to miss goal on cutting sodium intake, says WHO\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Livemint <\/b>on<b> 10th March 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organization(WHO) has released a report titled \u201cGlobal report on sodium intake reduction\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key findings of the report?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodium, an essential nutrient, increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death when consumed in excess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main source of sodium is table salt (sodium chloride) but it is also a part of other condiments such as sodium glutamate which is naturally found in some foods and is also used as a flavour enhancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing highly cost-effective sodium reduction policies could save an estimated 7 million lives globally by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Progress on reducing sodium intake:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The World is off-track to achieve its global target of reducing sodium intake by 30% by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The global average salt intake is estimated to be 10.8 grams per day, more than double the WHO recommendation of fewer than 5 grams of salt per day (one teaspoon).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Currently, only 5% of WHO member states are protected by mandatory and comprehensive sodium reduction policies and 73% of members lack the full range of implementation of such policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><b>India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a mandatory declaration of sodium on pre-packaged food but no other mandatory measure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommendations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A comprehensive approach to sodium reduction includes adopting mandatory policies and WHO\u2019s four \u201cbest buy\u201d interventions related with sodium which greatly contribute to preventing non-communicable diseases. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Reformulating foods to contain less salt, and setting targets for the amount of sodium in foods and meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Establishing public food procurement policies to limit salt or sodium-rich foods in public institutions such as hospitals, schools, workplaces and nursing homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Front-of-package labelling that helps consumers select products lower in sodium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Behaviour change communication and mass media campaigns to reduce salt\/sodium consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cWorld to miss goal on cutting sodium intake, says WHO\u201d published in Livemint on 10th March 2023.
