{"id":232516,"date":"2023-03-20T19:21:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T13:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=232516"},"modified":"2023-03-20T19:21:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T13:51:34","slug":"do-you-know-indias-geoheritage-sites-of-jhamarkotra-and-zawar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/do-you-know-indias-geoheritage-sites-of-jhamarkotra-and-zawar\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you know India\u2019s geoheritage sites of Jhamarkotra and Zawar?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cDo you know India\u2019s geoheritage sites of Jhamarkotra and Zawar?\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 20th March 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Society of Earth Scientists (SES), a group of independent researchers bridging the gap between earth science and society, organized the International Geodiversity Day in October 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of this, the researchers visited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/geological-heritage-sites-of-himalayan-region-of-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geo-heritage sites <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">namely: the fossil park at Jhamarkotra and metallurgical remains at Zawar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a fossil park at Jhamarkotra?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fossil park at Jhamarkotra is located in the state of Rajasthan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It hosts stromatolites dating back 1.8 billion years, exhibiting a variety of textures and sizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhamarkotra\u2019s fossils are phosphate-rich because the trapped sediments were mainly phosphate minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are stromatolites?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A stromatolite is a layered sedimentary rock formed by microorganisms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, stromatolite fossils preserve the record of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae \u2013 the earliest life on the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These organisms developed the ability to photosynthesize and make their own food. By doing so, they pumped vast amounts of oxygen into the atmosphere of primordial Earth, allowing most other life to develop and flourish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stromatolites are sometimes called \u2018alligator-skin rocks\u2019 because of their unusual texture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Zawar?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zawar is an interesting geo-heritage site that lies some 40 km south of Udaipur. It is the world\u2019s oldest known zinc-smelting site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discovery here of earthen retorts \u2013 brinjal-shaped, long-necked vessels \u2013 is particularly significant.
