{"id":233028,"date":"2023-03-21T19:21:32","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T13:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=233028"},"modified":"2023-03-21T19:21:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T13:51:32","slug":"ipcc-ar-6-synthesis-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ipcc-ar-6-synthesis-report\/","title":{"rendered":"IPCC AR 6 Synthesis Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b>The post is based on the following articles<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 \u201cIPCC AR 6 Synthesis Report\u201d<\/b> published in <b>PIB <\/b>on <b>20th March 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 \u201cU.N. panel calls for rapid action against climate change to secure a liveable future\u201d\u00a0 <\/b>published in <b>The Hindu <\/b>on <b>21st March 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 \u201cIndia faces highest risk of climate change: IPCC\u201d\u00a0 <\/b>published in the <b>Business Standard <\/b>on <b>21st March 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) has released A<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a Synthesis Report?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Synthesis Report (SYR) is the culmination of a cycle of reports (the Sixth Assessment) that have been published over the past five years<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/synthesis-report-ipcc-meet-in-switzerland-the-significance-likely-impact\/\"><b>Click Here to read more<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key findings of the Synthesis Report?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Temperature breaching the 1.5C threshold:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Average temperatures have already touched 1.1\u00b0C (about 1.07\u00b0C was contributed by human activities) above pre-industrial times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2030 there is a 50% chance that global surface temperature in any single year could exceed 1.5\u00b0C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is still not doing enough to limit global temperatures from breaching the 1.5C threshold despite there being multiple, feasible and effective options to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overshooting 1.5\u00b0C will result in irreversible adverse impacts on certain ecosystems with low resilience, such as polar, mountain, coastal ecosystems, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To keep within the 1.5\u00b0C limit, emissions need to be reduced by at least 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, and at least 60% by 2035. This is the decisive decade to make that happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Impact of Climate Change: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verse climate impacts are already more far-reaching and extreme than anticipated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About half of the global population currently contends with severe water scarcity for at least one month per year, while higher temperatures are enabling the spread of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria, West Nile virus and Lyme disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change has also slowed improvements in agricultural productivity in middle and low latitudes, with crop productivity growth shrinking by a third in Africa since 1961.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the primary GHG and needs to be drastically reduced. The report mentions that for every 1000 GtCO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emitted by human activity, global surface temperature rises by 0.45\u00b0C (best estimate, with a likely range from 0.27 to 0.63\u00b0C).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Finance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finance flows from developed to developing countries fall short of the levels needed to meet climate goals across all sectors and regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 It also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledges that in 2018, public and publicly mobilized private climate finance flows from developed to developing countries were below the collective goal under the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement to mobilize USD 100 billion per year by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does the Synthesis report say about India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233146\" style=\"width: 344px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-233146 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/98848672.jpg?resize=344%2C320&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Synthesis Report\" width=\"344\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/98848672.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/98848672.jpg?resize=300%2C279&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: TOI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite minimal contribution to global warming\u00a0over the past century, India is among the countries that face the highest risk from climate change\u2019s impact, ranging from heat waves to cyclones and urban and rural displacement.<\/p>\n<p>India is the hotbed of global climate investment but it needs to distribute equally to adaptation, along with mitigation efforts in the clean energy space.<\/p>\n<p>The report also echoes the Prime Minister\u2019s vision for <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/pm-launches-global-initiative-lifestyle-for-the-environment-life-movement\/\">\u201cLiFE\u201d, or Lifestyle for Environment<\/a>, which is a global mass movement for promoting environmentally friendly lifestyles to protect and preserve the environment.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the recommendations given by the Synthesis Report?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need for better quantification of losses and damages, which will enable policymakers to negotiate better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate justice is crucial because those who have contributed least to climate change are being disproportionately affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world must not emit more than 500 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent after 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The strategies to counter climate change needed to be rooted in diverse values, including scientific knowledge, indigenous knowledge and local knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from public finance (includes the promised but never received $100 billion), other avenues including private finance, local finance, national and international, bilateral, and multilateral finance need to be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the following articles \u2013 \u201cIPCC AR 6 Synthesis Report\u201d published in PIB on 20th March 2023. \u2013 \u201cU.N. panel calls for rapid action against climate change to secure a liveable future\u201d\u00a0 published in The Hindu on 21st March 2023. \u2013 \u201cIndia faces highest risk of climate change: IPCC\u201d\u00a0 published&hellip;
