Source<\/span><\/b>: The post is based on the article \u201c<\/span>Concluding on a high note, in Manhattan\u201d <\/span><\/b>published in \u201c<\/span>The Hindu\u201d <\/span><\/b>on <\/span>21st March 2023<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Syllabus: <\/span><\/b>GS2- Important international institutions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Relevance<\/span><\/b>: About India as a UNSC member.<\/span><\/p>\n News<\/span><\/b>: India has concluded its eighth stint in the United Nations Security Council at the end of December 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The focus was on <\/span>maritime security, terrorism, UN peacekeeping, reformed multilateralism and the Global South.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India was elected Chair of three important UNSC Committees: <\/span>the Taliban Sanctions Committee, Libyan Sanctions Committee and Counter\u00adterrorism Committee.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Maritime issues<\/span><\/b>: The Prime Minister of India chaired for the first time a UNSC meeting on maritime security.\u00a0<\/span>India’s statement for the first time is a direct reference to the <\/span>UN Convention on the Law of the Sea<\/span><\/b>. It called it international law setting out the <\/span>legal framework<\/span><\/b> in the context of maritime activities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It also called for <\/span>freedom of navigation, anti\u00adpiracy and combating terror and transnational crime at sea.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Major conflicts<\/span><\/b>: In case of major conflicts over the world, the Council stood polarised and unable to act decisively. India tried to bring them on the same page.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There was a military takeover in Myanmar in 2021. India ensured<\/span> balanced and comprehensive Council pronouncements<\/span><\/b>. It finally culminated in a <\/span>resolution on Myanmar <\/span><\/b>in December 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In August 2021, the Taliban forcefully seized power in Afghanistan. India was able to <\/span>steer the<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Negotiations.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It resulted in<\/span> UNSC Resolution 2593<\/span><\/b>. The resolution lays down benchmarks for <\/span>stopping cross-border terrorism<\/span><\/b> from Afghan soil; protecting the <\/span>rights of women, minorities and children<\/span><\/b>; ensuring an<\/span> inclusive government<\/span><\/b>, and providing<\/span> humanitarian assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During the Ukraine conflict, India took an <\/span>independent stand<\/span><\/b>. It called for <\/span>dialogue and peace.<\/span><\/b> India spoke out against such <\/span>sanctions on oil, food and fertilisers<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Terrorism<\/span><\/b>: India has enhanced its focus on terrorism. As Chair of the <\/span>UNSC Counter\u00ad terrorism Committee<\/span><\/b>, its meeting was organised in India in October 2022.\u00a0<\/span>India’s proposal to list Abdul Rehman Makki, Deputy Chief of the Lashkar-e-Taiba under <\/span>UNSC Resolution 1267 sanctions <\/span><\/b>was approved by the UNSC.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Peacekeeping<\/span><\/b>: India has been the <\/span>largest contributor to UN peacekeepers<\/span><\/b>. Its launching of the <\/span>UNITE Aware technology platform<\/span><\/b> to strengthen the <\/span>real\u00adtime protection of peacekeepers<\/span><\/b> is to be noted.\u00a0<\/span>In 2021, India piloted the first UNSC resolution, calling for<\/span> accountability for crimes against peacekeepers<\/span><\/b>. India gifted <\/span>two lakh vaccines<\/span><\/b> to all UN peacekeepers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Climate change<\/span><\/b>: In 2021, India thwarted a move by the West. It wanted to take out climate change from the <\/span>UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/span><\/b> process and brought it under the ambit of the UNSC. The draft resolution was defeated in the Council when India and Russia voted against. <\/span><\/p>\n A change in <\/strong>religious extremism<\/span><\/b>: India also raised the issue of a contemporary form of <\/span>religiophobia<\/span><\/b> in the Council.
