GS2- Polity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Relevance<\/span><\/b>– Issues related to social justice<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n News<\/span><\/b>– Recently an undergraduate student of chemical engineering at the IIT Bombay, committed suicide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What is discrimination?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Discrimination is not necessarily hurling abuse at somebody. It is a<\/span> layered and continuous process<\/span><\/b> that happens every day. It steadily creates an<\/span> atmosphere of \u201cus\u201d and \u201cthem\u201d<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The political philosopher, Michael Sandel, provides <\/span>criticism of meritocracy<\/span><\/b>. He calls it a <\/span>societal idea<\/span><\/b>l. He argues that <\/span>arrogance among the elites<\/span><\/b> of their capabilities and <\/span>politics of humiliation<\/span><\/b> are natural outcomes of <\/span>meritocracy.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Some sections of the IITs are also suffering from <\/span>meritocratic arrogance<\/span><\/b>. This happens, when elite class tend to \u201clook down on those who do not rise\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Such an approach undermines <\/span>social recognition and esteem<\/span><\/b> for those who lack the credentials that are rewarded by the system to the upper class. <\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is only a corrective measure of<\/span> historical injustice<\/span><\/b>. It is not a<\/span> sufficient principle<\/span><\/b> to foster an <\/span>equitable society.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Social well-being depends upon <\/span>cohesion and solidarit<\/span><\/b>y. <\/span>Individual happiness<\/span><\/b> does not only require the freedom to rise to new positions of comfort and distinction. It also requires that they should be able to lead a<\/span> life of dignity and culture<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n IITs should reflect on the <\/span>blind spots of biases<\/span><\/b>. Faculty at the IITs need to <\/span>re-imaginate classrooms<\/span><\/b> as spaces <\/span>free of meritocratic or discriminatory judgements<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Building empathy and fostering a culture of equality, dignity, and fraternity<\/span><\/b> cannot happen through <\/span>short orientation programmes<\/span><\/b>. These should be built into the curriculum at the IITs.
