What are global efforts taken to reduce the incidence of TB?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 1993, the World Health Organization declared TB a global health emergency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria<\/strong> began disbursing money directed toward the global TB epidemic<\/strong> in 2003.\u00a0 But conditions are imposed<\/strong> on it by its donor constituents. There are conflicts among stakeholder<\/strong>s regarding the amount of money allocated<\/strong> for three diseases.<\/p>\n

TheStopTB Partnership<\/strong>mobilises a disparate set of actors towards the goal of ending TB.<\/p>\n

How has the global TB response been adapting to changes? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is engagement of people<\/strong> affected by the disease.<\/p>\n

There is use of molecular diagnostic tool<\/strong>s developed for diagnosing TB.<\/p>\n

Social safety programmes<\/strong> to address the poverty drivers of the TB epidemic<\/strong> have been introduced.<\/p>\n

Mobile and computational data revolution<\/strong> is being leveraged to improve treatment outcomes<\/p>\n

What are the three areas that are important to achieve the goal of ending TB by 2030?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The First area<\/strong> is vaccine development.<\/em><\/p>\n

There is a need for the development and wide use of an adult TB vaccine<\/strong>. The current vaccine delivered at birth is 100 years old.<\/p>\n

The experience with the COVID\u00ad19 vaccine development process can be used. The issue of equitable distribution<\/strong> seen with the COVID\u00ad19 vaccines should be avoided.<\/p>\n

The second area<\/strong> is that of getting newer therapeutic agents for TB. <\/strong><\/p>\n

After a development drought of nearly five decades, a few new anti\u00ad-TB drugs<\/strong> are today available for widespread use.<\/p>\n

Moving to an injection free and shorter all oral pills regimen for TB<\/strong> will improve compliance and reduce patient fatigue.<\/p>\n

The effort to come up with newer drugs needs to accelerate so that drug resistance<\/strong> to the most recently introduced drugs can be tackled.<\/p>\n

The third area<\/strong> of action is diagnostics. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Use of AI-\u00adassisted handheld radiology with 90\u00ad second reporting and 95% plus accuracy<\/strong> for diagnosing TB is important development. It should be rolled out universally<\/strong>immediately.<\/p>\n

Sentinel, passive surveillance and interpretation<\/strong> of cough sounds for TB is another breakthrough area. This allows for home\u00adlevel screening and monitoring.<\/strong> It should be used widely.<\/p>\n

Confirmatory diagnosis using nucleic acid amplification<\/strong> can be explored. InDx diagnostics coalition and other biotech startups should be incentivised to break the complexity of molecular testing and price barriers<\/strong> with affordable high\u00ad quality innovations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
