Note<\/strong>: China lists \u201c12 principles\u201d for peace. This includes respect for \u201csovereignty of all countries\u201d, \u201cabandoning Cold War mentality\u201d, resuming peace talks and stopping unilateral sanction,<\/em><\/p>\n

What are the key highlights of the Russia-China joint statement?<\/h2>\n

The joint statement a)<\/strong> Neglected western sanctions and emphasised on strengthening trade and economic cooperation, especially energy cooperation, b)<\/strong> reaffirmed their commitment to the 2021 Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation, c)<\/strong> Decided to move ahead on China-Mongolia-Russia natural gas pipeline project and d)<\/strong> highlighted the areas of cooperation include civil aviation manufacturing, the automobile industry, etc, and e)<\/strong> condemned the Quad grouping, which India is a part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: Russia is now China\u2019s biggest supplier of oil. Ever since the sanctions, Russia’s access to critical technology is entirely dependent on China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implications for western countries<\/strong>: a)<\/strong> China will not let Russia fail in Ukraine. This may well affect the future trajectory of the conflict in Ukraine, b)<\/strong> US and Europe will need all the support to counter the Russia-China partnership.<\/p>\n

Implications for India<\/strong>: a)<\/strong> Diminishes the \u201cstrategic autonomy\u201d available with Russia, b)<\/strong> complicates the security environment with Russia, c)<\/strong> Reduces the reliability of Russia as Russia\u2019s dependence on China is increasing rapidly, d)<\/strong> Might force India to align more towards the West, and e)<\/strong> The success of India\u2019s presidency of the G20 will be measured on the outcome document, which needs the co-operation of both Russia and China.
