News- <\/strong>\u00a0The Union\u00a0Law Minister\u00a0 to label retired judges who question \u201cstate policies\u201d as being \u201canti-India\u201d elements. It is a flawed understanding of concepts and a matter of grave concern for citizens.<\/p>\n

What are the rights of retired judges with respect to free speech?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Judges who demit office are also citizens<\/strong> of this country. They have a right to free speech and expression. <\/strong>They have a duty to speak up when they find the legislature, the executive or even the judiciary to be transgressing their limits.<\/p>\n

The act of questioning the state is not a case of being \u201canti-national\u201d.It is a case of being a \u201cconcerned patriot\u201d<\/strong>. The response of the state has to be to either justify the measures it has adopted, or take the advice offered and course correct.<\/p>\n

The remarks impact the rest of the citizenry.<\/strong> They will generate less ideas. There will be fewer discussions <\/strong>on issues of seminal importance as there could be a tendency from now on to play it safe.<\/p>\n

Actions of the state will be unchecked <\/strong>because mere acts of questioning the state will endanger the individual.<\/p>\n

What is the importance of freedom?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The final end of the state<\/strong> is to make men free to develop<\/strong> them. The deliberative forces <\/strong>should prevail over the arbitrary. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Liberty is both an end and means<\/strong>. Liberty ensures happiness. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Freedom to think is necessary to discover and spread political trut<\/strong>h. Without free speech, assembly discussion would be futile.<\/p>\n

The greatest threat to freedom is an inert people<\/strong> and public discussion<\/strong> is a political duty.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
