Due to this, there are separate competition for men and women athletes.<\/p>\n<p>However, transgender women were misusing their categories. <strong>For example,<\/strong> Lia Thomas used hormone replacement therapy and moved from the men\u2019s category to the women\u2019s category. She started breaking records in the IVY League competition after that.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What were the previous rules for transgender women?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In January, WA implemented the <strong>\u2018preferred option\u2019<\/strong> for transgender women. This required the reduction of blood testosterone limit to below 2.5nmol\/L for two years<strong> to qualify as transgender woman to compete in the female category.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, despite this, WA opted for a ban because the \u2018preferred option\u2019 did not have any takers. There was little support within the sport federations for the option presented to stakeholders.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Which other sports have banned transgender female athletes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>World Rugby in 2020<\/strong> became the first international sports federation to bar transgender women from the female competition.<\/p>\n<p>After this, <strong>Rugby Football League, Rugby Football Union, British Triathlon and FINA<\/strong> (the international swimming federation) also banned transgender women from the female competition.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are other rules changed by WA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to WA, <strong>DSD (Differences in Sex Development) athletes<\/strong>, or those who have genes linked with one sex but whose reproductive organs may not be atypical, must keep their testosterone below 2.5 nmol\/L for 24 months in order to compete in female events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source:\u00a0The post is based on the article \u201cWhy transgender female athletes can\u2019t compete in female events\u201d\u00a0published in\u00a0The Indian Express\u00a0on\u00a025th March 2023.
