Rao wins Nobel Prize equivalent in statistics\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b>on <b>10th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian-American statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao has been awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the International Prize in Statistics?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Prize in Statistics is awarded every two years by a collaboration among five leading international statistics organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prize recognizes a major achievement by an individual or team in the statistics field, particularly the achievement of powerful and original ideas that have led to practical applications and breakthroughs in other disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why was C R Rao awarded the International Prize in Statistics?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was awarded for his groundbreaking paper, \u2018Information and accuracy attainable in the estimation of statistical parameters\u2019 published in 1945. It demonstrated three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of statistics:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cram\u00e9r-Rao lower bound:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It provides a means for knowing when a method for estimating a quantity is as good as any method can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rao-Blackwell Theorem:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It provides a means for transforming an estimate into a better\u2014in fact, an optimal\u2014estimate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Information geometry:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It integrated principles from differential geometry into statistics, including the concepts of metric, distance, and measure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Information geometry has recently been used to aid the understanding and optimization of Higgs boson measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, the world\u2019s largest and most powerful particle accelerator.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cIndian-American C.R.
