{"id":237092,"date":"2023-04-10T19:46:07","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T14:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=237092"},"modified":"2023-04-11T12:51:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T07:21:40","slug":"language-friendship-bridge-project-india-to-bridge-language-gap-with-neighbours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/language-friendship-bridge-project-india-to-bridge-language-gap-with-neighbours\/","title":{"rendered":"Language Friendship Bridge Project: India to bridge language gap with neighbours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cIndia to bridge language gap with neighbours<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b>on <b>10th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian Council for Cultural Relations(ICCR) has planned a special project called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The Language Friendship Bridge\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Language Friendship Bridge Project?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create a pool of experts in languages spoken in countries like Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Indonesia to facilitate better people-to-people exchanges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Under the project, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICCR has planned to train five to 10 people in the official languages of each of these countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 As of now, the ICCR has zeroed in on 10 languages: Kazakh, Uzbek, Bhutanese, Ghoti\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(spoken in Tibet), Burmese, Khmer (spoken in Cambodia), Thai, Sinhalese and Bahasa\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(spoken in both Indonesia and Malaysia).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the need for this project?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, the language learning focus till now has been on European languages like Spanish, French and German, along with the languages of major Asian economies like China and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the focus on other languages like kazak, Sinhalese, Bhutanese have been very less. Only a handful of universities teach these languages, Sinhala, for example, is taught at the Banaras Hindu University and the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) under the Ministry of Defence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, considering our cultural imprints in these countries, India cannot afford to ignore the languages of these countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How will the project be implemented?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICCR has discussed two possibilities for implementing this project:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>One <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is to institute tie-ups wherein teachers from these countries come and teach courses in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The second approach <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is ICCR offering scholarships to Indian students to go and study these languages in the countries where they are spoken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language experts feel that the second option is the better one as a proper cultural environment is needed to learn a language in its entirety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cIndia to bridge language gap with neighbours\u201d published in The Hindu on 10th April 2023 What is the News?
