{"id":237723,"date":"2023-04-13T20:11:16","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T14:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=237723"},"modified":"2023-04-17T16:57:36","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T11:27:36","slug":"a-beginners-guide-to-the-large-hadron-collider-its-functions-and-its-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-beginners-guide-to-the-large-hadron-collider-its-functions-and-its-future\/","title":{"rendered":"A beginner\u2019s guide to the Large Hadron Collider, its functions and its future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cA beginner\u2019s guide to the Large Hadron Collider, its functions and its future\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b>on <b>13th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Large Hadron Collider(LHC) built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is on the energy frontier of physics research, conducting experiments with highly energized subatomic particles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Large Hadron Collider(LHC)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large Hadron Collider is the world&#8217;s largest and highest-energy particle collider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Built by:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Located at:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The accelerator lies <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a tunnel 100 meters underground at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, on the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To study minuscule subatomic particles which are the smallest known units of matter and the building blocks of all things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Working:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Its work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves sending beams of protons, which are positively charged particles present in the nucleus of atoms, speeding towards each other at nearly the speed of light in the 27-kilometre ring of the LHC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Scientists will record and analyze the collisions of the particles in the two beams as part of a set of experiments, which will be used to study dark matter, dark energy and other mysteries of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Achievements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2012, scientists at CERN announced to the world the discovery of the Higgs boson or the \u2018God Particle\u2019 during the LHC\u2019s first run. This led to Peter Higgs and his collaborator Fran\u00e7ois Englert being awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What lies ahead for the <\/b><b>Large Hadron Collider(LHC)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LHC is the biggest and most complex machine in the world and it may have paved the way for some of the most important scientific discoveries in recent times including the Higgs Boson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But CERN has plans for a future machine that will be called the Future Circular Collider.
