{"id":238248,"date":"2023-04-17T20:50:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T15:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=238248"},"modified":"2023-04-18T09:51:38","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T04:21:38","slug":"why-are-sudans-army-and-paramilitary-forces-fighting-each-other","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/why-are-sudans-army-and-paramilitary-forces-fighting-each-other\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are Sudan\u2019s army and paramilitary forces fighting each other?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cWhy are Sudan\u2019s army and paramilitary forces fighting each other?\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express on 17th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 56 civilians have been killed and 595 people including combatants have been wounded in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, since fierce fighting broke out between the country\u2019s army and paramilitary forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the cause of conflict in Sudan?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The roots of the ongoing conflict in Sudan go back to April 2019, when Sudan\u2019s long-serving authoritarian <\/span><b>President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.He was overthrown by military generals following a countrywide uprising against him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Bashir\u2019s ouster, civilians continued their demonstrations, seeking democratic elections and the establishment of a civilian government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led to the <\/span><b>constitution of the Sovereignty Council, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a power-sharing body of military officers and civilians.This council would lead Sudan to elections at the end of 2023 and Abdalla Hamdok was appointed Prime Minister for the transitional period<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the <strong>military overthrew Hamdok\u2019s government<\/strong> in October 2021.The military announced that it would hold power until elections are held in July 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after this coup, <\/span><b>relations between the military and the RSF deteriorated. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSF was founded by Bashir to crush a rebellion in Darfur that began more than 20 years ago due to the political and economic marginalization of the local people by Sudan\u2019s central government.The RSF has been accused of widespread atrocities).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main sticking points between the military and RSF is over the plans to include the 100,000-strong RSF into the army and who would then lead the new force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The violence erupted as members of the RSF were redeployed around the country in a move that the army saw as a threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s at stake in the Sudan conflict?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudan is in a volatile region bordering the Red Sea, the Sahel region and the Horn of Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its strategic location and agricultural wealth have attracted regional power plays, complicating the chances of a successful transition to civilian-led government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western powers fear the potential for a Russian base on the Red Sea, which Sudanese military leaders have expressed openness to.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cWhy are Sudan\u2019s army and paramilitary forces fighting each other?\u201d published in Indian Express on 17th April 2023 What is the News?
