Gardens <\/span>capture a part of the earth\u2019s biodiversity<\/span><\/b> for our enjoyment. Modern academic gardens<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>often have hundreds and thousands of dried plant specimens for research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rulers, from ancient civilisations to modern ones owned botanical gardens rich in native<\/span> plants and plants collected from distant places. A beautiful garden was an <\/span>important metric of<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span>one\u2019s prosperity and administration.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between the 15th to 17th centuries, European explorations led to the establishment of several<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>academic botanical gardens. The oldest of these,<\/span> Orto Botanico di Padova in Italy, <\/span><\/b>was founded in 1545.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most well-known, the <\/span>Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew near London,<\/span><\/b> was formally consolidated in 1840.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some facts about botanical gardens in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The oldest of the Indian Botanic gardens called the <\/span>Acharya Jagadish Chandra (AJC) Bose Indian Botanic Garden<\/span><\/b>, in Howrah was established in 1787. The Garden is spread over 109 hectares.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kolkata is also the headquarters of the <\/span>Botanical Survey of India.<\/span><\/b> It is the country’s major research centre in botanical surveys and documentation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exact number of botanical gardens in India is not known. The published number ranges from<\/span> between 10 to 35.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the issues with India’s approach to botanical gardens?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our scientific and educational institutions have neglected many a<\/strong><\/span>s<\/strong>pects of plant biology: taxonomy, ecology, evolution, population ecology and stress biology<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u20b9300 crores Chengalpattu Botanical Garden is being planned across 138 hectares. It will be <\/span>India\u2019s largest botanical garden.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CBG has the potential to become a <\/span>major centre for the exploration and discovery<\/span><\/b> of India’s plant wealth. It will be a<\/span> centre of research, education, citizen science, and outreach<\/span><\/b> in plant biology. It will be a<\/span> forceful voice in conservation.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew has been chosen as a <\/span>key partner for technical expertise<\/span><\/b> on what plants to use and how to maintain them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What measures can be taken for the success of the proposed botanical garden?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many institutions and individuals in India also have <\/span>relevant and appropriate expertise<\/span><\/b> in the design and development of gardens. It can be used.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
