GS1- social empowerment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Relevance<\/span><\/b>: Issues related to women’s empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n News<\/span><\/b>: The article deals with the issues of the employment status of Muslim women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n AISHE 2021 data on higher education enrolment<\/span><\/b> in the country showed that there were more women than men from the Muslim community in undergraduate courses. Out of 1,000 Muslim students in higher education, 503 are women.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But, there has been an <\/span>absolute decrease in Muslims in higher education<\/span><\/b>. The number of students from the community in higher education decreased to 19.21 lakh in 2020-21 from 21 lahks in 2019-20. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The<\/span> female labour force participation (FLFP) rate<\/span><\/b> has stagnated at very low levels in our country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Women\u2019s employment is seen as a <\/span>supplemental source of income<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The share of women employed in <\/span>unpaid labour<\/span><\/b> has increased even for highly educated women. In 2017-18, 6.2% of women with graduate or higher levels of education worked as unpaid helpers. By 2021-22, this share had increased to 11.2 per cent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Muslim women are absent from the workforce.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The<\/span> female labour force participation rate of Muslim women<\/span><\/b> in the country is 15%, as compared to 26.1% for Hindu women.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Over the past three years, Muslim women have had the <\/span>lowest LFP rate<\/span><\/b> amongst all religious groups in the country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Only 12.4% of working Muslim women <\/span>are salaried<\/span><\/b> as compared to 16.2% of Hindu women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Employers need to ensure <\/span>women\u2019s inclusion<\/span><\/b> in the workplace. They should also take an <\/span>intersectional approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Research shows that Muslim women face <\/span>significant discrimination in hiring<\/span><\/b> at entry-level roles. There is a need to <\/span>incorporate mechanisms <\/span><\/b>to address <\/span>biases in hiring.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There is a need to a<\/strong><\/span>void faith stereotyping, and design inclusive networking opportunities and company events<\/span><\/b>. It is necessary to promote <\/span>cultural awareness<\/span><\/b>, create an <\/span>inclusive schedule for employees with faith-related needs<\/span><\/b>. Women should be <\/span>offered compassion and support.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Government and policymakers need to make those jobs available that women want. They need to <\/span>create ecosystems<\/span><\/b> that are supportive of employed women. This involves creating space for women from all communities in <\/span>policy conversations.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Families and society need to prioritise women\u2019s employment so that women can have <\/span>agency, express themselves, and expand their sources of happiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The stereotype of men being the<\/span> sole breadwinner<\/span><\/b> of the family puts a lot of pressure on them.
