{"id":239855,"date":"2023-04-27T19:33:30","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T14:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=239855"},"modified":"2023-05-02T17:30:21","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T12:00:21","slug":"cabinet-approves-the-policy-for-the-medical-devices-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cabinet-approves-the-policy-for-the-medical-devices-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet approves the Policy for the Medical Devices Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>Cabinet approves the Policy for the Medical Devices Sector<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on <b>26th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Cabinet approved the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the need for a National Medical Devices Policy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medical devices sector in India is a sunrise sector which is growing at a fast pace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market size of the medical devices sector in India is estimated to be $11 billion (approximately, \u20b9 90,000 Cr) in 2020 and its share in the global medical device market is estimated to be 1.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian medical devices sector is on a growth track and has an enormous potential to become self-reliant and contribute towards the goal of universal health<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of India has already initiated the implementation of PLI Scheme for medical devices and support for the setting up of 4 Medical device Parks in the States of Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building upon these measures, a holistic policy framework to accelerate this growth and fulfill the potential of the sector is the need of the hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the purpose of the National Medical Devices Policy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Objectives: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To accelerate the growth path of the medical devices sector with a patient-centric approach;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 To emerge as the global leader in the manufacturing and innovation of medical devices by achieving a 10-12% share in the expanding global market over the next 25 years;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 To help the Medical Devices Sector grow from the present $11 Bn to $50 Bn by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key Features of the policy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical devices sector will be facilitated and guided through a set of strategies that will be cover six broad areas of policy interventions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Regulatory Streamlining: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creation of a Single Window Clearance System for Licensing of Medical Devices; coordination between all the stakeholder departments\/ organizations such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AERB, MeitY, DAHD, etc., Enhancing the role of Indian Standards like BIS; Designing a coherent pricing regulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Enabling Infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Developing medical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">device parks and clusters in line with the National Industrial Corridor Program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the proposed National Logistics Policy 2021 under the ambit of PM Gati Shakti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Facilitating R&amp;D and Innovation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Supporting R&amp;D and innovation through the establishment of Centres of Excellence in academic and research institutions, innovation hubs, \u2018plug and play\u2019 infrastructures and support to start-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Attracting Investments in the Sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Along with recent schemes and interventions like Make in India, Ayushman Bharat program, Heal-in-India, Start-up mission, the policy encourages private investments, series of funding from Venture Capitalists and Public-Private Partnership (PPP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Human Resources Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Skilling, reskilling, and upskilling of professionals in the medical device sector; Supporting dedicated multidisciplinary courses for medical devices in existing institutions; Developing partnerships with foreign academic\/industry organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brand Positioning and Awareness Creation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The policy envisages the creation of a dedicated Export Promotion Council for the sector under the Department which will be an enabler to deal with various market access issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the significance of this policy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The policy is expected to provide the required support and directions to strengthen the medical devices industry into a competitive, self-reliant, resilient and innovative industry that caters to the healthcare needs of not only India but also of the world.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cCabinet approves the Policy for the Medical Devices Sector\u201d published in PIB on 26th April 2023 What is the News?
