{"id":240191,"date":"2023-04-29T19:52:40","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T14:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=240191"},"modified":"2023-05-02T16:15:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T10:45:09","slug":"call-to-protect-historically-significant-structures-at-thirunelly-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/call-to-protect-historically-significant-structures-at-thirunelly-temple\/","title":{"rendered":"Call to protect historically significant structures at Thirunelly temple"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cCall to protect historically significant structures at Thirunelly temple\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 27th April 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has urged the government to conserve the historically significant structures, including the 600-year-old \u2018Vilakkumadom\u2019, at Sree Mahavishnu Temple at Thirunelly in Wayanad,Kerala.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Thirunelly Temple?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirunelly Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to the Lord Maha Vishnu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Located in: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located on the sides of Brahmagiri Hill, a part of the Sahyadri Mountain Ranges in the Wayanad district of Kerala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as the <\/span><b>Sahyamala Kshetram and Kashi of the South.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Architecture: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple is a fine specimen of classical Kerala temple architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The inner sanctum is surrounded by a tile-roofed structure and there is an open courtyard around the sanctorum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Along the outer wall of the temple is a cloister made of granite pillars cut in cubical style. This part of the temple architecture is slightly unusual for a Kerala temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirunelli is also the only temple in the world where devotees can perform all the rituals related to one\u2019s life, starting from birth to death and life after death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The rituals in this temple are performed on the banks of stream Papanashini, which originates from the Brahmagiri hills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 There is also a sacred rock near the river called Pinnappara where ritual offerings to the spirits of the departed are made (known as bali).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cCall to protect historically significant structures at Thirunelly temple\u201d published in The Hindu on 27th April 2023 What is the News?
