This is because the value of India\u2019s imports from Russia far outweighs its exports to the country.<\/p>\n<p>This left Russia with excess rupees in hand. But with that rupee, Russia was unwilling to spend on Indian goods or assets. So, now Russian demands for the settlement of bilateral trade in U.S. dollars. The excess dollars that other countries accumulate due to the U.S.\u2019s trade deficit has been invested back in U.S. assets such as in debt securities issued by the US government.<\/p>\n<p>The major reason for such investment is due to <strong>a)<\/strong> The high level of trust among global investors in the U.S. financial markets, and <strong>b)<\/strong> the \u2018rule of law\u2019 in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: The last time the U.S. ran a trade surplus was way back in 1975.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Chinese yuan is seen as the primary alternative to the USD owing to China\u2019s rising economic power.
