{"id":241732,"date":"2023-05-10T20:11:53","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T14:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=241732"},"modified":"2023-05-10T20:11:53","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T14:41:53","slug":"most-asia-pacific-countries-ill-prepared-for-natural-disasters-escap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/most-asia-pacific-countries-ill-prepared-for-natural-disasters-escap\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Asia-Pacific countries ill-prepared for natural disasters: ESCAP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cMost Asia-Pacific countries ill-prepared for natural disasters: ESCAP\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><b>Down To Earth <\/b>on <b>10th May 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a new study by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ost countries in Asia and the Pacific are inadequately prepared to manage the rising challenges of extreme weather events and natural disasters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key highlights from the UNESCAP report on the Asia Pacific region?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asia-Pacific region accounts for more than half of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the most rapidly developing regions of the world, with a significant proportion of the global population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past 60 years, temperatures in the region have increased faster than the global mean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme, unpredictable weather events and natural hazards have become more frequent and intense Tropical cyclones, heatwaves, floods and droughts have brought immense loss of life and displacement, damaging people\u2019s health and pushing millions into poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 10 countries most affected by these disasters, six are in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The costs of climate change are also too high. The annual average losses from natural and biological hazards in Asia and the Pacific are approximately $780 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the challenges faced by the Asia Pacific region in tackling Climate Change?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region is also home to most of the world\u2019s low-lying cities and vulnerable small island states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries in the region also lack the necessary data as well as means to support adaptation and mitigation efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, in the absence of decisive action, climate change will remain a leading cause of poverty and inequality across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the steps recommended by UNESCAP? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report enlisted the changes required to close the emissions gap in three key sectors:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Energy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some 85% of the region\u2019s primary energy supply came from fossil fuels in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 There is a need for rapid uptake of renewable energy. But this requires restructuring national energy systems, new technical capacities and significant investment in supply and infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The report stresses cross-border electricity grids to increase the share of renewable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transport:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The transport sector, primarily powered by oil, should be shifted to a low-carbon pathway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 This can be achieved by reducing transport distance through integrated land use, planning, shifting to sustainable transport modes with low-carbon or net-zero-carbon emissions, as well as improving vehicle and fuel efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Integrate climate considerations into regional trade agreements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade must be climate-smart \u2014 85% of the regional trade agreements signed since 2005 to which at least one Asia-Pacific economy is party contained climate-related provisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The private sector must be encouraged to work towards a low-carbon pathway and sustainability should be ingrained into business operations.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cMost Asia-Pacific countries ill-prepared for natural disasters: ESCAP\u201d published in Down To Earth on 10th May 2023 What is the News?
