{"id":241903,"date":"2023-05-11T20:02:15","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T14:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=241903"},"modified":"2023-05-11T20:02:15","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T14:32:15","slug":"who-are-the-meitei-manipurs-valley-dwellers-with-an-old-and-rich-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-are-the-meitei-manipurs-valley-dwellers-with-an-old-and-rich-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Who are the Meitei, Manipur\u2019s valley-dwellers with an old and rich history?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cWho are the Meitei, Manipur\u2019s valley-dwellers with an old and rich history?\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published i<\/span>n <b>Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 11th May 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-Tribal Students\u2019 Union of Manipur (ATSUM) has carried out a solidarity march in order to oppose the demand of the Meitei Community to be included in the List of State\u2019s Scheduled Tribes(ST).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The march broke into violent clashes after an order from the Manipur High Court, directing the State to pursue a 10-year-old recommendation to grant ST status to the non-tribal Meitei community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who are Meitis?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-are-meiteis-protest-against-st-demand-turns-violent-in-manipur-curfew-imposed-in-entire-state\/#:~:text=Who%20are%20the%20Meitei%20community,official%20language%20of%20Manipur%20State.\"><b>Click Here to read<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Meiteis are divided into seven Salai or clans \u2014 Mangang, Luwang, Khuman, Angom, Moirang Kha, Ngangba, and Sarang Leishangthem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why does the Meitei community want ST Status?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Meitei community has been demanding ST status since 2012, asking to provide them with constitutional safeguards to preserve their culture, language, and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Meiteis argue that they were recognised as a tribe before the merger of Manipur with India in 1949 but lost their identity after the merger in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of being left out of the ST list, the Meitei community feels marginalized and victimized without any constitutional protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their population, which was 59% of the total population of Manipur in 1951, has now been reduced to 44% as per 2011 Census data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They believe that granting ST status would help preserve their ancestral land, tradition, culture, and language, and safeguard them against outsiders.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cWho are the Meitei, Manipur\u2019s valley-dwellers with an old and rich history?\u201d published in Indian Express on 11th May 2023 What is the News?
