but in 2018 they significantly revised this estimate, showing that going past 1.5 <\/span>\u00b0C<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0would be calamitous for the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past few decades the overheating world has nudged the mercury up so that in 2016, the warmest on record, global temperatures were 1.28 \u00b0C above the pre-industrial figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What difference will El-Nino make?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two key elements &#8211; the first is the continuing high levels of carbon emissions from human activities that despite a fall during the pandemic are still going up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second is the likely appearance of El Ni\u00f1o, a weather phenomenon with global implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the last three years, the world has been experiencing a La Ni\u00f1a event which has dampened climate warming to some extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the extra heat that El Ni\u00f1o will bring to the surface of the Pacific this year will likely push the global temperature to a new high next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here is a 98% chance of at least one in the next five years beating the temperature record set in 2016, when there was an exceptionally strong El Ni\u00f1o.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, El Ni\u00f1o increases global temperatures in the year after it develops, in this case, that means 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cKey climate threshold likely to be breached in 5 years: UN\u201d published in The Hindu on 18th May 2023 What is the News?
