{"id":243586,"date":"2023-05-23T20:10:35","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T14:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=243586"},"modified":"2023-05-23T20:10:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T14:40:35","slug":"de-risking-not-decoupling-whats-this-g7-strategy-against-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/de-risking-not-decoupling-whats-this-g7-strategy-against-china\/","title":{"rendered":"De-risking, not decoupling: What\u2019s this G7 strategy against China?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>De-risking, not decoupling: What\u2019s this G7 strategy against China?<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Indian Express <\/b>on <b>23rd May 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G7 countries have said that they would build economic resilience for themselves, based on a strategy of diversifying and deepening partnerships and de-risking but not decoupling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u201cde-risking\u201d was again used in the statement to describe the G7 countries\u2019 stance towards China on economic matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is de-risking?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US State Department describes de-risking as the phenomenon of financial institutions terminating or restricting business relationships with clients or categories of clients to avoid, rather than manage, risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, de-risking is to move businesses away from areas that are considered risky in terms of the returns they could generate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the context of China, de-risking can be interpreted as a reduction of the reliance on China in the economic sphere \u2014 for the supply of materials or as a market for finished goods \u2014 so that potential risks to trade and disruption of supply chains are reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How is de-risking different from decoupling?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decoupling refers to the deliberate dismantling \u2013 and eventual re-creation elsewhere \u2013 of some of the sprawling cross-border supply chains that have defined globalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An expert has explained the two terms using an analogy from an investment perspective: Decoupling means cashing out your whole portfolio; de-risking means selling what you consider the riskiest assets, say, deleveraging on your margins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is there a focus on de-risking instead of de-coupling?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De-risking ties with China became a more regular part of diplomatic conversations after the European Commission president said that it is neither viable \u2013 nor in Europe\u2019s interest \u2013 to decouple from China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India too has endorsed de-risking.
