{"id":243588,"date":"2023-05-23T20:07:49","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T14:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=243588"},"modified":"2023-05-23T20:07:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T14:37:49","slug":"methane-mitigation-policies-cover-13-emissions-most-not-stringent-enough-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/methane-mitigation-policies-cover-13-emissions-most-not-stringent-enough-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Methane mitigation policies cover 13% emissions, most not stringent enough: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cMethane mitigation policies cover 13% emissions, most not stringent enough: Study\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Down To Earth <\/b>on <b>23rd May 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study, only 13% of methane emissions are covered by global methane mitigation policies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Methane?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/global-methane-assessment-the-un-report-on-human-caused-methane-emissions\/\"><b>Click Here to read<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is responsible for around 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture, fossil fuels as well as solid waste and wastewater are the three major sources of methane.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Methane Policies?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane policies are actions by governments that explicitly aim to monitor, prevent, or reduce methane emissions from anthropogenic sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, 281 policies are in place across sectors that release methane, including energy, waste, and agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers found that 90% of identified national policies were from three regions: North America (39%), Europe (30%), and Asia Pacific (21%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The policies targeting fossil methane (coal, oil, and gas) are lower than biogenic methane (released by living organisms).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trend has emerged despite readily available solutions to cut methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What about Methane policies in India?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, there are no effective policies targeting methane emissions from rice cultivation and biomass burning (burning of crop waste residues such as rice paddy straw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997, the Government of India designed a policy to extract Coal bed Methane from coal-bearing areas prior to the mining of coal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the policy was ineffective in incentivising coal bed methane production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At present, coal bed methane is not produced from any working or operational coal mines in the country<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coal bed methane is the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced during the coal formation process, which gets trapped on the surface of the coal in tiny pores and fractures.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cMethane mitigation policies cover 13% emissions, most not stringent enough: Study\u201d published in Down To Earth on 23rd May 2023 What is the News?
