The combined estimated annual average loss<\/strong> in the G20 countries alone is $218 billion<\/strong>. It is equivalent to 9% of the average annual investment<\/strong> in infrastructure<\/strong> made by them.<\/p>\n

Reducing risk can be achieved mainly by reducing vulnerability and exposure<\/strong> to risk through some measures. Disasters can set back development gains<\/strong>. Hence, risk reduction is an important strategy if a country\u2019s economic ambitions are to be realised.<\/p>\n

Setting up early warning system<\/strong>s, undertaking periodic risk assessments<\/strong>, constructing disaster-resilient infrastructure are<\/strong> important strategies.<\/p>\n

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure<\/strong> is presently chaired by India and the United States.<\/p>\n

The recently concluded high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the midterm review<\/strong> of the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030<\/strong> mentions the importance of G20\u2019s efforts <\/strong>in the implementation of the Sendai Framework.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The G20 provides a broader platform to drive global goals on disaster risk reduction<\/strong>. The perspectives that G20 as a group will bring to the table would be unique.<\/p>\n

For example, any talk about risk financing<\/strong> will not be merely about additional financial resources. It will also include more efficient, effective and predictable<\/strong> financing mechanisms.<\/p>\n
