It was designed and installed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Kolkata.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Foucault pendulum?<\/h2>\n<p>It is a deceptively simple device used to illustrate the earth\u2019s rotation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Founded by<\/strong>: The Foucault pendulum is named for L\u00e9on Foucault (1819-1868), the French physicist who devised the apparatus in the 19th century.<\/p>\n<h2>How does the Foucault pendulum function?<\/h2>\n<p>The pendulum consists of a bob suspended at the end of a long, strong wire from a fixed point in the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>As the pendulum swings, the imaginary surface across which the wire and the bob swipe is called the plane of the swing.<\/p>\n<p>For instance,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_245186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-245186\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-245186\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Foucault-pendulum.png?resize=385%2C354&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Foucault pendulum\" width=\"385\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Foucault-pendulum.png?w=657&amp;ssl=1 657w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Foucault-pendulum.png?resize=300%2C276&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-245186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Schoolphysics<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>a)<\/strong> If the pendulum is installed at the North Pole, it will basically be swinging as the earth rotates \u2018below\u2019, <strong>b)<\/strong> If the pendulum is installed over the equator, the plane won\u2019t appear to shift at all because it will be rotating along with the earth, and <strong>c)<\/strong> On any other latitude, the plane will shift through 360 degrees in \u201cone sidereal day divided by the sine of the latitude of its location<\/p>\n<p>A Foucault pendulum is not easy to set up. It must be designed, installed, and set swinging in such a way that the bob\u2019s motion is influenced to the extent possible only by gravity.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: In 1991, the then-new Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, commissioned the country\u2019s first Foucault pendulum for public display from the NCSM.
