\u201cCabinet approves Constitution and Empowerment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for Facilitation of \u201cWorld\u2019s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector”\u201d<\/b> published in\u00a0the PIB <\/b>on 31s<\/strong>t May 2023<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cWorld\u2019s largest grain storage plan: Centre to implement pilot project in 10 districts\u201d<\/b> published in The Hindu <\/b>on 1s<\/strong>t June 2023<\/b><\/p>\n Union Cabinet has approved the constitution and empowerment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the facilitation of the \u201cWorld\u2019s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector.\u201d<\/p>\n Chairman<\/strong>: IMC will be constituted under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Cooperation<\/strong>. Other Ministers will be part of the IMC.<\/p>\n Aim<\/strong>: a)<\/strong> To facilitate the \u2018World\u2019s Largest Grain Storage Plan in the Cooperative Sector.\u2019 b)<\/strong> To address the shortage of agricultural storage infrastructure in the country by creating infrastructure such as godowns, etc. for Agriculture and Allied purposes, at selected \u2018viable\u2019 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Mode of work<\/strong>: The IMC will work on the convergence of various schemes <\/strong>of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Ministry of Food Processing Industries.<\/p>\n Implementing strategy<\/strong>: Ministry of Cooperation will implement a pilot project in at least 10 selected Districts of different States\/ UTs in the country.<\/p>\n The creation of decentralized storage capacity will reduce food grain wastage<\/strong> and strengthen food security<\/strong> of the country.<\/p>\n It would prevent distress sale of crops<\/strong> by providing various options to the farmers. This\u00a0enable the farmers to realise better prices for their produce.<\/p>\n It will reduce the cost incurred in the transportation<\/strong> of food grains to procurement centres and again transporting the stocks back from warehouses to FPS.<\/p>\n The Plan would strengthen PACS<\/strong> by enabling them to diversify their business activities, thus enhancing the incomes of the farmer members as well.<\/p>\n Host of other benefits<\/strong>: The plan will address not just the shortage of agricultural storage infrastructure, but also enable PACS to undertake various other activities.
