There is a huge difference between China’s claim to have a peaceful relationship <\/strong>with India and its actions. Beijing should undergo a psychological assessment.<\/strong> It should maintain pragmatism into its South Asia policy. <\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a need to mend ties.<\/strong> Acknowledging India as an indispensable Asian and global power<\/strong> is a starting point for any future cooperation.<\/p>\n

Certain good faith measures<\/strong> are needed. It should maintain calm<\/strong> at the borders. It should not undermine India\u2019s relationship with its neighbors<\/strong> in South Asia. Maintaining peace at the borders<\/strong> is the first step towards cooperation.<\/p>\n

Moreover, there is no strategic logic<\/strong> for the uninhabitable high grounds<\/strong> that China is trying to capture.<\/p>\n

China has built a foreign policy narrative<\/strong> based on a lack of respect from the West. It should treat everyone with respect<\/strong>, especially a rising power<\/strong> like India.<\/p>\n

Why does the onus of improving relationships lie more on China?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Indians feel that China\u2019s India policy is driven by dogmas such as the Middle Kingdom and unipolar Asia. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the 1962 Sino-Indian war, Sinophiles within the Indian establishment have held the view that China\u2019s frontier aggression <\/strong>is driven by Beijing\u2019s desire to contain India in Asia and the developing world.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s dream of a unipolar Asia<\/strong> will never materialise. If Japan was a counterweight<\/strong> in the past, India is the counterweight of the future. Recent macroeconomic forecasts<\/strong> suggest that India\u2019s position is strong in a long run.<\/p>\n

What are the impacts of Chinese aggressive moves on its relationship with India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

China\u2019s aggression is pushing India towards military alignment with West. <\/strong>It exacerbates China\u2019s security dilemma<\/strong> with a deepening Indo-US alliance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

India has had more hesitation with the West than it has with China today. However, China\u2019s belligerence <\/strong>is creating a new set of hesitations for China. <\/strong><\/p>\n

When India joined the RCEP<\/strong><\/a> negotiations <\/strong>in 2012 and became the second-biggest stakeholder in the AIIB<\/strong> in 2014, it was seen as the start of Asian multilateralism.<\/p>\n
