{"id":248288,"date":"2023-06-16T20:17:59","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T14:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=248288"},"modified":"2023-06-16T20:33:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T15:03:18","slug":"gender-social-norms-index-2023-prejudices-against-women-didnt-reduce-in-last-decade-90-people-still-hold-gender-bias-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/gender-social-norms-index-2023-prejudices-against-women-didnt-reduce-in-last-decade-90-people-still-hold-gender-bias-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Social Norms Index 2023: Prejudices against women didn\u2019t reduce in last decade; 90% people still hold gender bias: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>Prejudices against women didn\u2019t reduce in last decade; 90% people still hold gender bias: UN<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published i<\/span>n <b>Down To Earth <\/b>on <b>15th June 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) 2023 has been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Released by:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Development Programme(UNDP)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The index tracks people\u2019s attitudes towards women in four dimensions: political, educational, economic and physical integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 This helped in examining how biased beliefs can obstruct gender equality and human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key findings of the <\/b><b>Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) 2023?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Gender Bias:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nearly 90% of people still hold at least one bias against women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Political Participation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around half the world\u2019s population believe that men make better political leaders than women, and two in five believe that men make better business executives than women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries with greater bias exhibit a lower representation of women in parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, the share of heads of state or government who are women has remained around 10% worldwide since 1995, and women hold just over a quarter of parliament seats globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are grossly underrepresented in leadership in conflict-affected countries, mainly at the negotiation tables in the recent conflicts in Ukraine (0%), Yemen (4%), and Afghanistan (10%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigenous women, migrant women, and women with disabilities face even more significant challenges in attaining political representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Economic Gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite progress in education, gender gaps in economic empowerment persist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increase in women&#8217;s education has not translated into better economic outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 59 countries where adult women are more educated than men, the average income gap is 39%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Women in domestic chores and work:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In countries with higher bias in gender social norms, women spend more time than men \u2014 nearly six times \u2014 on domestic chores and care work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender-based inequalities in empowerment are partly because of biased gender social norms or the undervaluation of women\u2019s capabilities and rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the hopeful signs highlighted by the index?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall progress has been limited.
