Why was Yeats interested in them?\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on <b>23rd June 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian Prime Minister has gifted several gifts to the US President which includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first edition print of the book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ten Principal Upanishads<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 1937.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i><b><i> Ten Principal Upanishads<\/i><\/b><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">translated from Sanskrit by Shri Purohit Swami, a scholar of Hindu scripture and Irish poet WB Yeats is considered to be one of the best translations of the Upanishads.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the two categories of Hindu scriptures?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>There are broadly two categories of Hindu sacred texts:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shruti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (loosely translated as \u201cthe revealed\u201d) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smriti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cthe remembered\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The first category <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is considered to be the most authoritative and consists of the four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) and accompanying texts. These include Brahmanas (ritual texts), Aranyakas (\u201cforest\u201d or \u201cwilderness\u201d texts), and Upanishads (philosophical texts).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The second category<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Hindu scriptures is less authoritative \u2013 in many ways, they are considered to be derived from the first \u2013 but more popularly known. These include the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, Dharmashastras, Puranas and all other post-Vedic scriptures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the Upanishads?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upanishads date back to roughly 800-500 BC. They are also known as the Vedanta \u2013 as they signal the end of the total Veda \u2013 speculate about the ontological connection between humanity and the cosmos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They serve as foundational texts in many traditions of Hindu theology and have hence attracted far more attention than the Vedas themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upanishads also discuss concepts such as transmigration, which have today become central to Hindu tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upanishads were given particular importance in Hindu theology by 8th-century Hindu scholar <\/span><b>Adi Shankara,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose interpretations synthesized the Advaita Vedanta tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advaita Vedanta <\/b>i<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s a non-dualistic philosophy that has in modern times, under philosophers such as Swami Vivekananda and S Radhakrishnan, become the most dominant force in Hindu intellectual thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This philosophy emphasizes on the illusory nature of the transient phenomenal world around us, and puts forth the idea that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brahman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the only and ultimate real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the Upanishads, in fact, are concerned with the relationship between the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the distinct, unchanging self of an individual, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brahman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the ultimate reality in the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cPM gifts Biden Yeats\u2019 \u2018Ten Principal Upanishads\u2019: What are Upanishads?
