What are the issues with NIRF ranking?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The first<\/span><\/b> is the issue of <\/span>participation of institutions<\/span><\/b>. As per the <\/span>All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021<\/span><\/b>, only 12.3% of higher educational institutions participated in the ranking process.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further, the lack of <\/span>participation of institutions<\/span><\/b> from rural areas raises questions about the <\/span>inherent urban bias<\/span><\/b> in the ranking framework.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second issue<\/span><\/b> is the incongruence between <\/span>quantity and quality<\/span><\/b>. Of the top 100 colleges ranked by NIRF, 35 are from Tamil Nadu, 32 are from Delhi, 14 are from Kerala, and the remaining are from the rest of India. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Quality differences<\/span><\/b> are evident between private and government institutions as well. In the overall rankings, the highest rank secured by a private institution is 15.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third issue<\/span><\/b> stems from the close correlation between faculty strength and rankings. <\/span>Only 33.98%<\/span><\/b> adhere to the <\/span>AICTE-prescribed faculty-student ratio of 1:20.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth issue<\/span><\/b> is reflected in <\/span>scientific publications. <\/span><\/b>Only<\/span> 12.3% of institutions which have participated in the ranking contribute close to 90% of scholarly output in the country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward for improving higher education?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Both the Union government and the States should <\/span>earmark substantial funds<\/span><\/b> in their respective budgets for this.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s <\/span>share in the overall world scientific publications<\/span><\/b> is about <\/span>4.81%<\/span><\/b>. In comparison. China\u2019s share of world publications increased from <\/span>5% in 2000 to 26% in 2018<\/span><\/b>. This was facilitated by <\/span>massive research investments<\/span><\/b> by the Chinese government.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Informed evidence-based policy<\/span><\/b> decisions should be taken in line with <\/span>NIRF standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The quality of State universities can be enhanced. It would also serve the purpose of<\/span> serving students in rural locations.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
