World Resources Institute\u2019s (WRI) Global Forest Watch has released a research report on forest cover.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key findings of the report by Global Forest Watch?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Forest cover loss in Tropical areas<\/b>: In 2022, Tropical areas lost 4.1 million hectares of forest cover \u2013 equivalent to losing an area of 11 football fields per minute.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The primary forest cover loss in tropical areas in 2022 was 10% more than in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/b> Primary forests are mature, natural forests that have remained undisturbed in recent\u00a0<\/span>history.They often store more carbon than other forests and are rich sources of biodiversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Primary forest loss is almost irreversible in nature: even if the green cover regrows, a secondary forest is unlikely to match the extent of biodiversity and carbon sequestering capabilities of a primary forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/b>orld is not on track to meet its forest-related commitments: <\/b>Two key goals set by the World Resources Institute includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Ending deforestation by 2030: <\/b>For this, the<\/span> global deforestation rate <\/span>needs to decrease by at least<\/b> 10% annually<\/b> to meet the 2030 target.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, the deforestation rates reduced <\/span>by 3.1% compared<\/b> to the 2018-2020 baseline.But it is still far away from the 2030 goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Restoring 350 million hectares of lost and degraded forests by 2030<\/b>. The overall change in tree cover over the past two decades has been a <\/span>net loss of 100 million hectares. <\/b>This indicates that forests are still being lost instead of being restored at the required rate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Countries Tropical forest cover:<\/b> Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the two countries with the most tropical forest cover and both registered losses of this resource in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 On the other hand, Indonesia and Malaysia managed to keep their primary forest cover loss to record-low levels in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

India:<\/b> India lost 43.9 thousand hectares of humid primary forest between 2021 and 2022, which accounts for 17% of the country\u2019s total tree cover loss in the period.
