India has asked China to abide by the <\/span>2016 arbitration decision, which had ruled in favour of the Philippines and rejected <\/span>China\u2019s territorial claims in the South China Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, <\/span>the Philippines instituted an arbitration proceeding against China in the Permanent Court of Arbitration under the UN Convention<\/span> on the Law of the Sea (<\/span>UNCLOS).<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>arbitration tribunal <\/span>ruled in favour of the Philippines in 2016, but this was rejected by China, which had called it \u201cnull and void\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

China, which claims rights to most of the South China Sea up to the <\/span>nine-dash line <\/span><\/a>has become more assertive in recent years leading to flare-ups in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n
