News- <\/strong>The membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is growing. Iran is the newest entrant at the just-concluded 23rd leaders\u2019 summit in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s association with the SCO began in 2005 as an Observer country, and it became a full Member State at the Astana Summit in 2017.<\/p>\n

What are the viewpoints of the Chinese strategic community about India’s membership of SCO?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

China’s strategic affairs community<\/strong> was opposed to the SCO membership of India<\/strong>. India\u2019s role and presence within the grouping is compared to Turkey in North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Foreign policy analysts in China have welcomed Iran\u2019s entry<\/strong>. It will prevent India from completely destroying the SCO.<\/strong><\/p>\n

India is spreading disharmony<\/strong> within the SCO. It is openly opposing the Belt and Road Initiative<\/strong> and unwilling to support the initiative to set up an SCO Development Bank.<\/strong><\/p>\n

India has actually used its SCO membership<\/strong> as a \u201cplatform\u201d to challenge and embarrass China.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some observers believe that India was accepted as a full member on Moscow\u2019s insistence.<\/strong> The purpose was to counterbalance China<\/strong> for advocating Pakistan’s inclusion<\/strong> into the organisation.<\/p>\n

China agreed to the Russian viewpoint that unity between Moscow, Beijing, and New Delhi<\/strong> is necessary for challenging US-led Western dominance in Asia<\/strong>, or particularly in Central Asia and Eurasia.<\/p>\n

Moscow was wooing India for purchasing Russian weapons<\/strong>, and put pressure on Beijing <\/strong>to keep it sandwiched between Moscow and New Delhi.<\/strong><\/p>\n

China was surprised when New Delhi joined the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue gathering<\/strong> in Manila when Doklam was continuing.<\/p>\n

Despite India joining the SCO and Wuhan and <\/strong>Chennai<\/strong><\/a> friendship summits in 2018 and 2019, <\/strong>the Doklam standoff<\/strong> was precursor to the Galwan border clash.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many scholars have called for expelling India<\/strong> from the SCO. They point to the success of Modi\u2019s official state visit to the US. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Some voices in China are demanding for the SCO \u201cexit mechanism\u201d <\/strong>and impose appropriate \u201cconstraints\u201d<\/strong> on member states.<\/p>\n
