The current Lok Sabha has <strong>43% members with criminal cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28% of MLAs<\/strong> have serious criminal cases today<strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>47 MLAs have <strong>murder cases<\/strong>, 181 have a<strong>ttempted murder case<\/strong>s, 114 have<strong> crimes against women cases, <\/strong>and 14 have <strong>rape cases. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The states\/Union Territories with highest number of <strong>MLAs with serious crimes cases<\/strong> are Delhi (53%), Bihar (59%), Maharashtra (39%), Jharkhand (38%), and Uttar Pradesh (38%).<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>candidate with a criminal record<\/strong> has a <strong>winning chance <\/strong>over 15%. In comparison, it was 4.7% for those with a <strong>clean record. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The number of c<strong>andidates with criminal record<\/strong>s has increased only because the party leaders continue to give more tickets to them.<\/p>\n<p>In advanced countries, there is no such system of <strong>distributing tickets<\/strong>. Candidates are selected in a more<strong> open and democratic process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Winning is the means to <strong>recover the money<\/strong> spent and <strong>accumulate it<\/strong> for the next election.<\/p>\n<p>ECI has taken very<strong> little action<\/strong> on this.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What shows the role of money power in politics?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The<strong> average assets<\/strong> of the MLAs were \u20b913,63 crore.<strong> Candidates with criminal cases <\/strong>have average assets of \u20b916,36 crore.<\/p>\n<p>Winning depends on wealth. Candidates in Indian Elections are now spending more than the <strong>United States presidential election<\/strong>. Candidates are <strong>spending public money<\/strong> to promise freebies like free water, free electricity, free travel, and free food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spending on elections<\/strong> is at an all-time high.
