{"id":252052,"date":"2023-07-14T19:48:13","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T14:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=252052"},"modified":"2023-07-14T19:48:13","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T14:18:13","slug":"sangam-literature-for-the-layman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sangam-literature-for-the-layman\/","title":{"rendered":"Sangam literature for the layman"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cSangam literature for the layman<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on <b>11th July 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu Text Book and Education Services Corporation has released <\/span><b>Patthuppattu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a collection of ten idylls, one of the earliest Sangam poetry collections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An idyll is a short poem descriptive of some picturesque scene or incident, mainly associated with pastoral life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Sangam Age?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sangam Age constitutes an important chapter in the history of South India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Tamil legends, there existed three Sangams (Academy of Tamil poets) in ancient Tamil Nadu popularly called <\/span><b>Muchchangam. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These Sangams flourished under the royal patronage of the Pandyas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The first Sangam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, held at Then Madurai, was attended by gods and legendary sages but no literary work of this Sangam was available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The second Sangam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was held at Kapadapuram but all the literary works had perished except Tolkappiyam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The third Sangam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Madurai was founded by Mudathirumaran.It was attended by a large number of poets who produced voluminous literature but only a few had survived.These Tamil literary works remain useful sources to reconstruct the history of the Sangam Age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sangam Literature:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collection of Sangam literature includes Tolkappiyam, Ettutogai, Pattuppattu, Pathinenkilkanakku and the two epics \u2013 Silappathigaram and Manimegalai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tolkappiyam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> authored by Tolkappiyar is the earliest of Tamil literature.It is a work on Tamil grammar but it provides information on the political and socioeconomic conditions of the Sangam period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ettutogai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Eight Anthologies consist of eight works.The <\/span><b>Pattuppattu o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r Ten Idylls consist of ten works.Both Ettutogai and Pattuppattu were divided into two main groups \u2013 Aham (love) and Puram (valour).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pathinenkilkanakku<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains eighteen works mostly dealing with ethics and morals.The most important among them is Tirukkural authored by <\/span><b>Thiruvalluvar.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Silappathigaram <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written by Elango Adigal and <\/span><b>Manimegalai <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Sittalai Sattanar also provides valuable information on the Sangam polity and society.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cSangam literature for the layman\u201d published in The Hindu on 11th July 2023 What is the News?
