France holds the distinction of being the first country to recognize India’s strategic significance <\/strong>following the 1998 nuclear tests.<\/p>\n

The partnership between India and France is the most crucial strategic alliance<\/strong> for India in Europe. It is characterised by a complete convergence of interests. <\/strong><\/p>\n

D.B. Venkatesh Varma described India and France as “mirror images”<\/strong> in their shared pursuit of strategic autonomy<\/strong> amid global power dynamics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a notable alignment<\/strong> in their strategic outlooks. France consistently supported India at crucial junctures, including during the civil nuclear negotiations with the United States.<\/p>\n

What are the areas of cooperation between India and France?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Defence<\/strong>– The defence relationship between India and France is characterised by trust and dependability<\/strong>. Unlike defence deals with the United States, French defence agreements<\/strong> come with no conditions or limitations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the Prime Minister’s visit, it is expected that agreements will be made regarding the acquisition of 26 Rafale-M fighters <\/strong>for the Indian Navy. Co-production of three additional Scorpene class submarines<\/strong> at Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd may be agreed.<\/p>\n

France has offered its Safran engine for the indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft<\/strong>, with a commitment for complete technology transfer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Climate change<\/strong>– The two countries also collaborate closely on climate change initiatives<\/strong>. They signed a Road Map on Green Hydrogen. It aims to integrate<\/strong> the French and Indian hydrogen ecosystems to establish a reliable global supply chain for decarbonized hydrogen. <\/strong><\/p>\n

In February 2022, Road Map on the Blue Economy and Ocean Governance was signed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Digital technology<\/strong>– There are possibilities for future cooperation in digital technology<\/strong>. A potential roadmap could be established for collaboration on 6G, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. <\/strong><\/p>\n

An MoU signed recently between NPCI International Payments Limited and Lyra<\/strong>, a French payment services provider, may soon enable UPI and RuPay payments <\/strong>in Europe.<\/p>\n

What shows the convergence of India and France on regional and global issues?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Both India and France value their strategic autonomy.<\/strong> Both pursue independence in their foreign policies and<\/strong> seek a multipolar world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As per French President, Europe must not get entangled in America\u2019s confrontation with China and preserve its \u201cstrategic autonomy\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He warned that Europe\u2019s security dependence on the US<\/strong> could turn European states into \u201cvassals\u201d <\/strong>if the US-China confrontation<\/strong> escalated. He also pushed the idea of Europe as a \u201cthird superpower\u201d<\/strong> with France in the lead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and its geopolitical consequences <\/strong>has brought a new European awareness of the strategic importance<\/strong> of India and vice versa.<\/p>\n

France has a better appreciation<\/strong> than other European states of New Delhi\u2019s position on the war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

India understands that if there will be a rapprochement between Europe and Russia<\/strong>, it will have to be led by France. For this reason, French support will also be critical to a consensus outcome at the G20 summit. <\/strong><\/p>\n
