The Peruvian Government has declared a state of national emergency for up to three months due to a spike in the number of cases of a rare neurological disorder called Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder where the body\u2019s immune system \u2014 which normally protects it from infections and other foreign bodies \u2014 mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerve cells.<\/span><\/p>\n

In most cases of GBS, the immune system damages <\/span>the myelin sheath. (<\/span>Myelin sheath is an insulating layer of fat and protein that surrounds the nerve cells. It enables signals to pass through the nerve tracts at breakneck speed under normal conditions).<\/span><\/p>\n

What causes Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome?<\/b><\/p>\n

The exact reasons for Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome are not yet understood. However, it often develops shortly after a person gets an infectious disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rarely, vaccinations can cause it. Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome was also linked to the cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, Zika virus and even the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the types of <\/b>Guillain-Barre syndrome?<\/b> GBS<\/span> has three forms:<\/span><\/p>\n

Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy(AIDP)<\/b> is the most common form found in North America and Europe. The most common sign of this form is muscle weakness that starts in the lower body and spreads to the upper body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Miller Fisher syndrome(MFS)<\/b>: In this, the paralysis starts with the eyes. This syndrome is less common in the US, and more common in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acute motor axonal neuropathy<\/b> is more common in China, Japan, and Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome curable?<\/b><\/p>\n

Currently, there is no certain cure for Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome. The paralysis not only affects the legs and arms, but also important parts of the nervous system that regulate breathing, blood pressure and heartbeat.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
