{"id":252385,"date":"2023-07-17T19:50:47","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T14:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=252385"},"modified":"2023-07-17T19:50:47","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T14:20:47","slug":"government-forms-new-panel-to-review-all-nso-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/government-forms-new-panel-to-review-all-nso-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Government forms new panel to review all NSO data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Government forms new panel to review all NSO data<\/b><b>\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu on 17th July 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has replaced the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES) with a Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why has the government decided to replace the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES) with the Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES) was set up in late 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was tasked with examining economic indicators pertaining to the industrial sector, the services sector and the labour force statistics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meant that their purview was limited to datasets like the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Annual Survey of Industries, the Index of Industrial Production and the Economic Census.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, that&#8217;s why SCoS has been set up with a broader mandate to review the framework and results of all surveys conducted under the National Statistical Office (NSO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the functions of the Standing<\/b><b> Committee on Statistics (SCoS)?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Chairman: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pronab Sen, India\u2019s first chief statistician and the former chairman of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), has been named as the chairman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Members: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee has 10 official members and four non-official members who are eminent academics. It can have up to 16 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mandate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advise the Ministry on technical aspects for all surveys, such as sampling, design, survey methodology and finalization of results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 To identify data gaps that need to be filled by official statistics, along with an appropriate strategy to plug those gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 To explore the use of administrative statistics to improve data outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Role of National Statistical Commission (NSC):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The committee will help finalize survey results.
