{"id":252397,"date":"2023-07-17T19:49:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T14:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=252397"},"modified":"2023-07-17T19:49:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T14:19:00","slug":"china-event-raises-concern-over-indias-only-ape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/china-event-raises-concern-over-indias-only-ape\/","title":{"rendered":"China event raises concern over India\u2019s only ape"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cChina event raises concern over India\u2019s only ape<\/b><b>\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 17th July 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Gibbon Network (GGN) held its first meeting in China to discuss conservation of Hoolock Gibbon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Hoolock Gibbon?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-252398\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/download-1.jpeg?resize=275%2C183&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoolock Gibbon is the only ape found in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is native to eastern Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Southwest China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, they are confined to the seven states of northeast India with Brahmaputra as the distribution boundary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They form an arboreal species and prefer to live in canopies of the evergreen forests in northeast India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They traverse across the canopy using their very long forelimbs hanging and jumping from branch to branch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with this, they are famous for their loud holou calls (that inspires their name \u201cHoolock\u201d) and duets which both male and female of a group indulge in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Threats:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hoolock gibbon faces threat primarily from the felling of trees for infrastructure Projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How many species of Hoolock Gibbon are there in India?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Zoologists, Northeast of India houses two species of the ape \u2014 the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eastern hoolock gibbon (Hoolock leuconedys) found in a specific region of Arunachal\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pradesh and the western hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) distributed elsewhere in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northeast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a study led by Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 proved through genetic analysis that there is only one species of ape in India.It\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debunked earlier research that the eastern hoolock gibbon was a separate species based\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the colour of its coat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Red List maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">categorizes the <\/span><b>Western hoolock gibbon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as <\/span><b>Endangered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Eastern hoolock gibbon\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as <\/span><b>Vulnerable.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cChina event raises concern over India\u2019s only ape\u201d\u00a0 published in The Hindu on 17th July 2023 What is the News?
