The biggest of India\u2019s big businesses seem to be thriving.<\/p>\n<p>But all the businesses in India are not <strong>making progress<\/strong>. The performance of a large number of <strong>informal enterprises<\/strong> is not good and they have not recovered from <strong>COVID-19-inflicted losses. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As per a report by a former Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor, the share of <strong>assets in the non-financial sectors<\/strong> owned by the <strong>Big-5 business groups<\/strong> has risen from 10% in 1991 to nearly 18% in 2021. While the share of the next five has fallen from 18% to less than 9%.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the dangers associated with a rapid rise in industrial concentration? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It uses <strong>market power<\/strong> to <strong>stifle competition<\/strong>. It leads to <strong>profit inflation or profiteering<\/strong>, through the <strong>manipulation of costs and prices<\/strong>. The result is<strong> extreme asset and income inequality. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Institutions of democracy<\/strong> are influenced by them through means such as the <strong>capture of the media<\/strong>. The r<strong>ole of civil society <\/strong>as a <strong>countervailing powe<\/strong>r is reduced in this process.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate result is <strong>corporate influence over political processes and the formulation of policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These tendencies are not stalled by <strong>competition in the \u2018market\u2019 but<\/strong> are a consequence of the functioning of markets.<\/p>\n<p>Asset and income inequality increases, and therefore there is <strong>differential power<\/strong> among economic agents, the <strong>functioning of the \u2018market\u2019<\/strong> favours the rich.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the emerging trends that show the narrowing of political distance between the state and big business? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Powerful voices<\/strong> within and outside the state have <strong>adopted neoliberalism<\/strong>. This implied adoption of the view that the role of the state is not to regulate private capital, but to facilitate its growth as means to all round economic progress.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Advocates of neoliberalism<\/strong> argue that the competition generated by a <strong>liberalised regime<\/strong> will <strong>counter concentration<\/strong>. The reverse has happened.<\/p>\n<p>In areas such as telecommunications and civil aviation, there was the initial increase in the number of new players. But a few were finally left, with <strong>signs of collusion<\/strong> among them. The consumer will be the loser.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>There is the propagation of the view that the state must help <strong>strengthen domestic big business<\/strong> against<strong> giant global competitors<\/strong>. <strong>State policy, diplomacy and public resources<\/strong> will be key instruments in this process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Liberalisation opened Indian markets, induced <strong>global competition for Indian businesses.<\/strong> But the state is <strong>protecting and promoting<\/strong> sections of big business through<strong> large-scale subsidies and transfers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>State is not interested in reducing the <strong>influence of money in politic<\/strong>s.
