{"id":252656,"date":"2023-07-19T20:51:52","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T15:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=252656"},"modified":"2023-07-19T20:51:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T15:21:52","slug":"indian-group-proposes-radical-new-way-to-settle-universe-expansion-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indian-group-proposes-radical-new-way-to-settle-universe-expansion-dispute\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian group proposes radical new way to settle universe expansion dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cIndian group proposes radical new way to settle universe expansion dispute\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu on 17th July 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA),Pune<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), have proposed a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new way to determine the Hubble constant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Hubble Constant?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hubble constant is a unit that describes how fast the universe is expanding at different distances from a particular point in space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the keystones in our understanding of the universe&#8217;s evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gets its name from Edwin Hubble who was first to calculate the constant from his measurements of stars in 1929.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How is Hubble Constant measured?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Two details are required to calculate the value of the Hubble constant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1) distance between the observer and astronomical objects and 2) velocity at which these objects are moving away from the observer as a result of the expansion of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, scientists have used three methods to get these details:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 First method: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They compare the observed brightness of a stellar explosion, called a supernova, with its expected brightness to figure how far away it could be. Then they measure how much the wavelength of the light from the star has been stretched by the expansion of the universe \u2013 i.e. the redshift \u2013 to figure how much it\u2019s moving away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Second method: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use changes to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) \u2013 radiation leftover from the Big Bang event \u2013 to estimate the Hubble constant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Third method:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They use gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime produced when massive\u00a0 astronomical objects \u2013 like neutron stars or black holes \u2013 collide with each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Drawbacks with these methods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Measurements from the first method have reported a Hubble constant about two units higher than the one derived by the second method. The third method hasn\u2019t yet matured enough to provide a precise measurement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the new method proposed by scientists to understand universe expansion rate?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new method proposed by the researchers uses <\/span><b>gravitational lensing.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gravitational lensing is when massive objects in space can warp spacetime. This bends all kinds of waves that travel near the objects, distorting them. The phenomenon is typically used to describe when light waves are bent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we have seen before, sometimes, extreme lensing of some objects can make them visually appear as multiple objects in the sky. Just like that, lensing can produce multiple copies of the same gravitational signal that can reach Earth at different times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers believe that the delays between the signals could be used to calculate the universe\u2019s expansion rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Scientists are yet to find lensed gravitational waves but there\u2019s good reason to believe that they will in the next two decades.
