There are concerns regarding the <strong>suppression of data, and political interference<\/strong> in the statistical institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> NSS surveys on consumption expenditure<\/strong> have consistently underestimated h<strong>ousehold consumption expenditure<\/strong> in comparison to the estimates derived from<strong> national account statistics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The results of the <strong>consumption expenditure survey<\/strong> conducted for the year 2017-18 have not been made available due to <strong>concerns regarding its quality<\/strong>. This particular survey is essential for <strong>estimating poverty and inequality levels<\/strong> in India.<\/p>\n<p>The survey is also utilized in <strong>calculating various indicators<\/strong> including the consumer price index, which holds significance for monetary policy considerations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the way forward to improve the government statistics?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Questions raised over <strong>survey mechanisms, overestimation of rural population and low response rate<\/strong> will need to be addressed. As will issues of data quality.<\/p>\n<p>There is a need to address the issues related to <strong>collection and dissemination of data <\/strong>even if they are politically uncomfortable. The lack of data only compounds the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The need to address<strong> weakness and gaps<\/strong> in the country\u2019s statistical apparatus cannot be denied. But, casting doubt on the<strong> accuracy and reliability<\/strong> of data if it does not conform to a <strong>specific narrative<\/strong> is not the right thing.
