{"id":253214,"date":"2023-07-24T18:48:58","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T13:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=253214"},"modified":"2023-07-24T18:48:58","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T13:18:58","slug":"manipur-violence-what-is-a-zero-fir-and-why-it-is-registered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/manipur-violence-what-is-a-zero-fir-and-why-it-is-registered\/","title":{"rendered":"Manipur violence: What is a Zero FIR and why it is registered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cManipur violence: What is a Zero FIR and why it is registered\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Indian Express on 24th July 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the nearly 6,000 cases of arson, violence, dacoity, and other offences registered in Manipur, nearly a third of them have been<\/span><b> Zero FIRs.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Zero FIRs?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a police station receives a complaint regarding an alleged offence that has been committed in the jurisdiction of another police station, it registers an FIR and then transfers it to the relevant police station for further investigation. <\/span><b>This is called a Zero FIR.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving the Zero FIR, the revenant police station registers a fresh FIR and starts the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When was the provision of Zero FIR established?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The provision of Zero FIR came up after the recommendation in the report of the <\/span><b>Justice Verma Committee, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was constituted to suggest amendments to the Criminal Law in a bid to provide for faster trial and enhanced punishment for criminals accused of committing sexual assault against women.
