{"id":253666,"date":"2023-07-27T21:38:04","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T16:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=253666"},"modified":"2023-07-27T21:38:04","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T16:08:04","slug":"nature-inspires-breakthrough-achievement-hazard-free-production-of-fluorochemicals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nature-inspires-breakthrough-achievement-hazard-free-production-of-fluorochemicals\/","title":{"rendered":"Nature inspires breakthrough achievement: Hazard-free production of fluorochemicals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Nature inspires breakthrough achievement: Hazard-free production of fluorochemicals<\/b><b>\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published i<\/span>n<b> Phys.org on 20th July 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers at the University of Oxford have achieved a groundbreaking breakthrough by developing a new technique to produce <\/span><b>fluorochemicals <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without using hazardous hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Fluorochemicals?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluorine is a highly reactive element that comes from a calcium salt called calcium fluoride, or fluorspar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluorine is used to make fluorochemicals, which in turn are used to produce plastics, agrochemicals, lithium-ion batteries and drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the process of making Fluorochemicals and what are its drawbacks?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Process:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fluorspar is mined and then treated with sulphuric acid at a high temperature to release hydrogen fluoride (HF).HF is then made to react with other compounds to create fluorochemicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Drawback: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major downside of this process is that HF is an extremely poisonous and corrosive liquid that irritates the eyes and respiratory tract even at low concentrations It also requires\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special transportation and storage requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Moreover, despite stringent safety regulations, HF spills have occurred numerous times in the last decades, sometimes with fatal accidents and detrimental environmental effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What have the researchers developed to overcome this drawback in making Fluorochemicals?<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers took inspiration from how the human body makes bones and teeth through calcium phosphate biomineralisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on this, they developed an innovative which involved grinding fluorspar with potassium phosphate in a ball-mill\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While fluorine is very reactive, calcium atoms prefer phosphorus even more, so the milling\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created calcium phosphate and another compound with fluorine atoms.
