{"id":253962,"date":"2023-07-29T21:07:45","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T15:37:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=253962"},"modified":"2023-07-29T21:07:45","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T15:37:45","slug":"worms-revived-after-46000-years-in-siberian-permafrost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/worms-revived-after-46000-years-in-siberian-permafrost\/","title":{"rendered":"Worms revived after 46,000 years in Siberian permafrost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cWorms revived after 46,000 years in Siberian permafrost\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <strong>Livemint<\/strong><\/span><b>\u00a0on 29th July 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have revived a worm that was frozen 46,000 years ago in Siberian Permafrost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What did the scientists discover?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, Scientists from Russia\u2019s Institute of Physicochemical and Biological Problems in Soil had discovered two species of microscopic nematode in Siberian Permafrost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These worms have been frozen since the late Pleistocene era, which is around 46,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After analyzing the specimens, they\u2019ve claimed at least one is from an entirely new species, which they have called them as <\/span><b>Panagrolaimus kolymaenis.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists revived one of the worms by rehydrating them with water and took other worms for further analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How did these worms survive 46,000 years?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many animals like nematodes, and more famously, tardigrades, can survive extreme conditions by entering a dormant state called \u201c<\/span><b>cryptobiosis\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisms in a cryptobiotic state can survive the complete absence of water and oxygen and withstand other extreme conditions including heat and cold in a \u201cstate between life and death.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientists also tested the hardiness of the ancient worms by mildly drying them in the laboratory. When they did that, the worms produced a sugar called<\/span><b> trehalose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which might be helping them survive harsh desiccation (drying) and freezing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the significance of this study?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study increases the longest documented cryptobiosis period in nematodes by tens of thousands of years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, this study also shows how animals can adapt to habitat change caused by climate change at a molecular level and survive despite changing weather patterns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cWorms revived after 46,000 years in Siberian permafrost\u201d\u00a0 published in Livemint\u00a0on 29th July 2023.
