{"id":254176,"date":"2023-07-31T20:48:10","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T15:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=254176"},"modified":"2023-08-31T10:03:29","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T04:33:29","slug":"express-view-on-india-china-ties-riding-on-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/express-view-on-india-china-ties-riding-on-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"Express View on India-China ties: Riding on hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; The post is based on the article <strong>\u201cExpress View on India-China ties: Riding on hope\u201d <\/strong>published in the <strong>\u201cThe Indian Express\u201d <\/strong>on <strong>31st July 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: <\/strong>GS2- Bilateral groupings and agreements<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance:<\/strong> Bilateral relationship between India and China<\/p>\n<p><strong>News- <\/strong>The Chinese President Xi Jinping might visit Delhi in September for the G20 summit.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why are some strategic experts optimistic over the Xi visit?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Xi\u2019 presence in Delhi is an opportunity to end the <strong>current stalemate in bilateral relations<\/strong> that began with <strong>China\u2019s aggression in Ladakh in the summer of 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There was a meeting between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Wang Yi, in Johannesburg on the <strong>margins of a BRICS forum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Chinese statement issued after the meeting referred to the <strong>\u201cBali Consensus\u201d between Modi and Xi <\/strong>on the need to <strong>\u201cstabilize bilateral relations\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are the prospects of resolving the stalemate in the relationship during Xi&#8217;s visit weak?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was not <strong>much interaction <\/strong>between Modi and Xi at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, last November.<\/p>\n<p>The Modi government has consistently emphasized that a return to <strong>normalcy in bilateral relations<\/strong> will not occur until Beijing restores <strong>peace and tranquillity <\/strong>along the border.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Chinese officials have urged India to <strong>set aside the border issue <\/strong>and focus on <strong>cooperating in other domains<\/strong>. However, Delhi has maintained its stance that the condition of the border reflects the overall state of the relationship<\/p>\n<p>China is reluctant to address the <strong>territorial disputes <\/strong>with its neighbouring countries, such as Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, and India.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Xi&#8217;s diplomatic representatives try to present a<strong> positive outlook <\/strong>on the discussions with these neighbours and <strong>assert progress<\/strong>, even when there is none<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Beijing issued <strong>\u201cstapled visas\u201d<\/strong> to Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh participating in World University Games in Chengdu, China. Beijing uses the stapled visas to assert its<strong> territorial claim over Arunachal Pradesh. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Territorial sovereignty <\/strong>is the major cause of<strong> multiple disputes<\/strong> between Delhi and Beijing.
