Why are some strategic experts optimistic over the Xi visit?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Xi\u2019 presence in Delhi is an opportunity to end the current stalemate in bilateral relations<\/strong> that began with China\u2019s aggression in Ladakh in the summer of 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There was a meeting between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Wang Yi, in Johannesburg on the margins of a BRICS forum.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Chinese statement issued after the meeting referred to the \u201cBali Consensus\u201d between Modi and Xi <\/strong>on the need to \u201cstabilize bilateral relations\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why are the prospects of resolving the stalemate in the relationship during Xi’s visit weak?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was not much interaction <\/strong>between Modi and Xi at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, last November.<\/p>\n

The Modi government has consistently emphasized that a return to normalcy in bilateral relations<\/strong> will not occur until Beijing restores peace and tranquillity <\/strong>along the border.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Chinese officials have urged India to set aside the border issue <\/strong>and focus on cooperating in other domains<\/strong>. However, Delhi has maintained its stance that the condition of the border reflects the overall state of the relationship<\/p>\n

China is reluctant to address the territorial disputes <\/strong>with its neighbouring countries, such as Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, and India.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Xi’s diplomatic representatives try to present a positive outlook <\/strong>on the discussions with these neighbours and assert progress<\/strong>, even when there is none<\/p>\n

Recently, Beijing issued \u201cstapled visas\u201d<\/strong> to Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh participating in World University Games in Chengdu, China. Beijing uses the stapled visas to assert its territorial claim over Arunachal Pradesh. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Territorial sovereignty <\/strong>is the major cause of multiple disputes<\/strong> between Delhi and Beijing. The PLA’s aggressive behaviour<\/strong> on the disputed border has undermined the efforts to manage these issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
