Conjunctivitis is often referred to as \u201cpink eye\u201d.It causes swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caused by: <\/b>Conjunctivitis infections are broadly of three types:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Allergic conjunctivitis: <\/b>It can be caused by common allergens like pollen, or due to the long-term presence of a foreign body in the eye, like hard contact lenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Bacterial or viral conjunctivitis:<\/b> It is infectious.It is most often caused by staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria from your own skin or respiratory system while the\u00a0 viral conjunctivitis is most commonly caused by contagious viruses associated with the common cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Chemical conjunctivitis<\/b>: It can be caused by irritants like air pollution, chlorine in swimming pools, and exposure to noxious chemicals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Symptoms: <\/b>Pink or red color in the white of the eye; swelling of the conjunctiva and\/or eyelids; increased tear production; feeling like a foreign body is in the eye(s) or an urge to rub the eye(s); itching, irritation, and\/or burning and discharge (pus or mucus).<\/span><\/p>\n

Treatment: <\/b>Treatment usually involves management of symptoms.<\/span>Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with antihistamines.Bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotic eye drops.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
